I think DMC3SE is the antithesis of NGB.

DMC3SE revolves around all-out offense. It feels like an extension to traditional beat 'em ups. The game believes in throwing tons of enemies at you at one time, but the enemies are nothing more than minor annoyances. The enemies are pretty much garbage.

NGB is more about defense, blocking and running around waiting for opportunities to strike. There are only a handful of enemies at any one time, but any of the regular enemies can slaughter you in a few hits.

DMC3SE emphasizes combat, and its clunky, loose controls and wonky camera make platforming a chore.

NGB has more of a rounded feel to it, with platforming segments well integrated with the rest of the game. It's the first 3D platformer that I enjoyed, and the tighter controls definitely contributed to it.

DMC3SE has a dynamic combo system which allows you to chain long strings of combos with an arsenal of melee weapons and guns that you can switch on the fly.

NGB is much more simplified with the best combo being about 5 button presses.

DMC3SE has an awful camera that obscures most of the enemies you're trying to fight. You can suddenly get hit from any which direction simply because the enemies are out of your sight. The game forbids you from adjusting the camera for the most part too. There are some segments where you're allowed freedom to rotate the camera 10 degrees, but whoop-de-doo.

NGB has a much much better view of the action. You are not likely to be blindsided. And in the case you don't like your view, you can reset the camera with a touch of a button, and you can fully rotate the camera at will.

Both games have incredible bosses though.

Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition is simply a one-trick pony, but I don't really care for the trick. I'm not sure how you can sell a game on a combo system alone, but apparently Capcom did and people love them for it. For me, the overwhelming feeling was boredom.

DMC3SE is all filler up until you reach a boss. The stages and enemies are pretty lame and do not warrant their inclusion into the game. In contrast, NG is intense at every step of the way, and the sheer strength of the enemies as well as the platforming segments make it a much better game. I don't really care that the combo system is simpler. Just because DMC3SE can have 20 memorized button presses vs NGB's 5 doesn't make it any more interesting. It's still (controlled) button mashing.

I will say that the bosses in DMC3SE can be pretty brutal. Maybe even more so than NG. I give those fights a lot of respect. But the rest of the game is very empty. I don't understand why a lot of 3D action games (Anubis Zone of Enders 2 anyone?) suffer from that. What's the point of having stages and regular enemies if they don't actually do anything?

Ive finished the game a few times along with Virgil and one thing ive came to love about this game is style...

Thats one of the main selling points in the combat system is Style~

with a 5 hit maximum in NGB your only allowed to show so much "style" in the heat of the moment. DMC maybe enemy retard / combo heavy, but the game has choices, and anyone willing to show off.. can and do it quite differently from others. Watching DMC vids online are way more cooler just because of the way the players can vary the endless combos rather than watch ryu run around and block and return between hits. NGB can be quite exhilarating for me at times buts thats when i shown off a killer defense. Even in Onimusha i've felt good bashing away on mindless enemies just for upgrading the weapon itself.. its a win win.

DMC is in no way i feel a full 3D enviroment type game.. there is a story to be told with the level design and the game design direction. Orbs are hidden off screen in particular areas where double jumping or bouncing off the right wall will give you this "exploration" bonus.. thats why strafing with both guns drawn feel good, its your placement on the screen.. it would suck to have a free camera when your trying to look all stylish for the director...

Despite the camera, the enemies do make specific set noises which alert on coming attacks from off screen.. being aware is just maybe a more advance user tactic..

In DMC3SE its mainly about the weapons, and leveling up the styles. In order to do that you'd have to fight constantly, so the filler that you are referring to is fortunately my gameplay. I find myself ending a fight and saying "fuck yea "more often than in NGB Smile
